when i received the news
that Nigel and Mina’s baby was born
on sept 20th, 2024
i decided that for the next month or so
when i would sit at the piano
or with the guitar
i would say her name
— “HeLan” —
then sit in silence
and play whatever she inspired.

HeLan, what will your verse be?

oh HeLan, if only you knew how lucky you are
to be born to these two warriors of love
who will stand in the wind of our cultural norms
to defend the importance of joy

who know to hold you
who know how important it is to feel fully
who have worked to look into themselves
to be ready to hold you through it all

this album is for the whole family.
